WHAT IS LEUKAEMIA?

Leukaemia is a cancer of the blood-forming cells, including the bone marrow and the lymphatic system. Depending upon whether the leukaemia is Acute (fast-growing), Chronic (slow-growing) and several other factors, different types of leukaemia exist. Some forms of leukaemia are common in adults while others occur mostly in children. In leukaemia, the bone marrow produces an excessive amount of abnormal white blood cells, which do not function properly. It seems to develop from a combination of genetic and environmental factors. There are complex treatments for leukaemia— depending on the type of leukaemia and other factors. Statistically speaking Leukemia seems to affect men, more than women, and nowadays has a 5-year survival rate of 61.3%. In simpler words, almost one in three people do not survive this disease.

Persistent fatigue, weakness

Easy bleeding or bruising
Recurrent nosebleeds
Tiny red spots on the skin (petechiae)
Excessive sweating, especially at night
Bone tenderness or pain
